The north-central Washington State fishery 150 miles straight south of my home in Kelowna B.C. has been on my wish list of Big Trout waters to fish for several years. We haven't had a bigger winter than I can remember, since I moved here in 1995. This has caused two conditions I have struggled with: 1) a major case of "cabin fever" 2) a pent up desire to pursue some brown trout. With only open water on Wickiup this Opener, I didn't have the stomach for the crowds and wanted things to settle a bit before I ventured out on it... read

This
was the last shot for me as I got out at Paulina yesterday
for the final time this year. I wasn't surprised to
see the snow starting to show, as I passed the 10
mile marker on the way up the hill. We had some moisture
and a small cold front come through on Thurs. night.
There was between an inch or two on everything and
it was beautiful, as the first early snows often are.
It was also cold....the temp in the car mirror said
32 at 12:30 that afternoon... read

Since
I was staying with my buddy John Werwie at Paulina
for part of the week, it was really convenient to
have a couple of guide trips at the same time. Saved
a little gas to boot. Bill Sysum and his father-in-law
Russ meet me at the dock around 1:00 for an afternoon
run at the browns. The evening before had been a little
slower than I like so I hung in at Paulina for an
hour or so. We then made a corporate decision to head

I
took Andrew Rose and his friend Dave out last week
on Paulina for a half day trip. They flew in from
Arizona for a little vacation and a shot at the browns.
You never know exactly what to expect this time of
year as the fish start to transition into the spawn.
Some real heavyweights have been caught in the fall
including the state record brown from Paulina a few
years back. That big female went 28 LB. 5 oz. and
the replica we did hangs at the store... read

I
think it was a line from the movie Poltergeist II
that the little girl said "Their back!"
That is what came to mind yesterday when I returned
to Lake Billy Chinook for the first time since spring.
I meant that in the context of the bull trout being
back where I thought they might be this time of year.
It was almost a year ago that I stumbled on to the
bulls staging up in the Metolius Arm. That first day
we started fishing for them around 3:00 in the afternoon
and quit at 6:30. After catching 19 bulls and probably
losing another 8-10 that got off, we knew we were
into something special. I made two more trips over
the course of a week and had almost the same results
before it ended. Mind you, these were 3-4 hour outings....not
all day. Do the math!... read

I
got a call from my buddy Tom Staley this evening.
I had forgotten that he had taken two of his kids
up to Billy Chinook for a shot at staging bulls up
in the Metolius Arm. I didn't write about it last
year because I wanted to keep it under wraps until
it was happening this year. It looks like it is time.
Tom, Jarred and Bob didn't get up the arm until around
3:30 this afternoon. I think Tom was going off what
we had experienced last year, which I will get into
after I cover Tom's outing... read

that I'm not padding my reports, I have to say that

I
took Dave and Jo Greenberg from Vermont out on Monday
for half a day on East and we did really well. Though
the numbers were down from previous trips the quality
more than made up for it. I guess it is unrealistic
for me to think we can continue to average 16 plus
fish an outing as we have the last 4 trips. Remember
these are only half day trips and we are usually posting
these numbers by 11:00 a.m. I'm just grateful that
we have done as well as we have... read

Lake has been red hot for browns so far this summer.

With
my son-in-law and Grandson in town it was just a matter
of time before we were on the water. We decided to
give Wickiup a try because I haven't been there in

much since I was there last in June. The water is
way down as is usual for this time of year considering
that we are still in a drought here in Central Oregon.

feet and falling a 1,000 a day right now... read

had something more substantial. By mid morning the

and things improved dramatically... read

I
had planned a trip with some of our friends for a
kokanee trip at Paulina Lake on Father's day. With
some clearing weather, we were hoping that the kokes
would be cooperating. I had been out on the preceding
Fri. with 20 m.p.h. winds, blowing snow and temps
that never got out of the 30's. I took Gary Miralles
from Shasta Tackle Co. and Mike Abbott the Allsports
salesman for Central Oregon to East Lake for some
kokanee fishing and a test drive of the new Strike
Vision camera from Walker Downriggers. It was double
tough fishing with only two kokes landed before we
got off the lake at noon. The camera is pretty cool

day. We saw a few strike the lures but they were definitely
