Awaiting the start of the Super Bowl, I was stirred from my afternoon nap by a call from Dan McAllister, webmaster for Trophytrouthunter.com. Dan is a good friend and was giving me a report on how well the weekend had gone. This was the ?annual LBC bull trout derby that several of the "valley boys" have been holding for a few years now. Jimmy Lewis, Ryan Daniels, Brian Wildish, Bret Martin, Brian Sanchez and Dan had all agreed to meet up at the lake for a friendly little ($20 a pop) derby for biggest bull trout. I was invited but problems with the charging system on my boat made me have to pass. Kind of sorry now that I had to miss the action.
It sounds like Dan had most of the luck with the exception of winning the pool. If I have it right, Brian Sanchez took down the $100 for his 11 Lb. bull caught early in the derby. Dan, however, had a career outing with some really nice bulls. It sounded like the majority of the bulls were caught up near the Metolius boundary on Castaic Swimbaits, Herring and Assassin lures. Dan and Brian Sanchez picked up bulls of 6.5, 9, 9.75, 10 and 11 Lb. I believe most of these fish came on Sat. with Dan's personal best 11 Lb. bull coming out Sun. morning before they got off the lake. Those are great numbers anytime but especially this winter when bigger bulls have been rather scarce. Congrats to you guys for a killer weekend!
I will try and get up there next week after my boat is ready and I am back from the Portland Show. Time to do some pre-fishing before the guide season takes off for me. May your dreams be full of big bulls!
Tight Lines, Rick
