Fishing
Report 3-14/15-06
I
had the opportunity to take Bob Deveny from Portland out
on his first bull trout trip with me on Tues. and Wed. of
this week. Bob and I meet last year at the Portland Show
and then he booked a trip with me last spring for brown
trout up in Newberry Crater. The highlight of that trip
was a 7.5 LB. hookjaw brown that we mounted for him.
Due
to some scheduling difficulties on both ends, we finally
hooked up at the Cove Palisades ramp around noon on the
14th. I headed up to the "hot spot," and we got
right after them. After a couple of 5 LB. bulls, Bob hooked
a decent fish but we didn't really realize how big it was
until it came out from under the boat. I immediately grabbed
the net and soon we were looking at a gnarly hookjaw that
was pushing right up to 11 LB. on my gripper scale. He has
decided to have us mount it for him. We caught the 4 bulls
in a little over an hour before the action subsided.
The
next morning, we were really chomping at the bit to get
after them. We started off right where we left off the night
before.........sticking some nice fish. The first bull topped
out at 8 Lb. All morning we were spanking the bulls with
a fish or a bite about every 15 minutes, consistently. When
things finally slowed up, we had caught 11 bulls and lost
5. The best bulls went 5,5,6,7,8, and 9 LB. We decided that
we would try and get him one to take home and worked hard
until the last 7 LB. bull was in the boat. We are continuing
to stick them with flasher/herring rigs off downriggers.
Look for more reports this weekend as I have two more trips
in the same number of days. I can't wait for it to get REALLY
good!
Tight lines, Rick
