It was my pleasure to have one of my friends and some of his family out on Fri. Bob Bloomquist and his son, Bob and son-in-law, Mike met me around 6:00 for one of the final bull trout trips of this spring season. With water temps rising and more smaller fish showing, things are winding down.
Again, the smaller bulls were showing more regularly than I would like. We did manage to stick (7) bulls for the day with only (1) legal fish. What a strange looking bull it was. A male with a large head and smallish body that weighed just under (5 Lb.). He was very dark with black mingled throughout his body and looked to be in bad shape.
Great company and conditions, but no monster bulls that day.
On Sat., I took Art McKim and his wife Evelyn for a day trip and the last one before I head off to do our DVD at Tahoe next week.
The rain moved in a little earlier than was forecast and we started with drizzle, but no wind. One of my favorite sayings is "The wind is the enemy" for the troller. At least excessive wind anyway. You lose some boat control and usually can only troll down wind.
Art and I hit it off well exchanging war stories from our plumbing days earlier in our lives. After a few dinks popped the 5 in. Lyman, one of the rods went over a little harder and the drag clicker began to sing some. Art let Evelyn take the bigger bull, and she was thrilled to land a beautiful (6.5 LB.) pre-spawn hen that we did release.
We stuck a total of (5) bulls that were mostly dinks and finally gave up with increasing rain showers around 4:30.
I have one more bull trout trip this spring season in early May and then will concentrate on some recreation fishing with family and friends for browns. Be sure to check back in for those reports.
Tight Lines, Rick
