After a fairly long layoff with sprinkler systems and landscaping at the house, I managed to finally get out to fish with Alec, my middle grandson, in early July. We didn't stick anything to write home about but landed a few browns to 3 LB. at East Lake. The highlight of our fishing adventures took place at Klamath Lake in lower Oregon.
It dawned on me that Alec had not been there since he was a baby and that it might be fun to take on some of those native rainbows that can get as big as your leg. Though we didn't get into anything even approaching those proportions, he did have fun with a couple of 5 LB. rainbows and a fat 6 LB. bow that was his personal best. The fish came up in the north end of Agency Lake where the Wood river dumps in. We hit them with Cleo and Daredevil spoons in patterns of copper and gold.
Some of my old friends from California arrived for a weeks stay in their motor home and we arranged for a day at East Lake with Ed Stanley and his buddy, George Mitchell. The weather had turned hot so we got out early on Wed. trying to beat the heat and the heavier boat traffic that usually develops during the vacation season. My last few trips to East had not produced any browns bigger than 3 LB. I was hoping to change that today. After several smaller browns on the rigger, I saw the rod bounce fairly hard and on Ed's turn in the saddle, he has into a nice fish brown that was right at 5 LB.
We seemed to stick a fish an hour with an occasional missed strike here and there. Early in the afternoon, I got my shot at a fish and turned this 4.5 Lb. brown loose right after we got his picture. Around 3:00 p.m., we decided to call it a day. We landed 8 browns to 5 LB. and took a few home to eat. I will probably be back next week with Colin so look for some reports to follow.
Tight Lines,
Rick
