On May 24th my son Russell and I were able to hook up for some fly fishing on Wickiup. We went to the Davis arm were I had fished earlier in the month and caught those big fish. We got a late start not getting there until late morning. the weather was unsettled with on and off rain and thunder storms with a few sun breaks. We worked the area for several hours, catching only a few small fish, when Russell finally hooked a good fish, a beautiful brown in the 4 to 5 pound range. The fish took a red and black leech in 8 to 10 foot of water.
After fishing this area hard for some time more without success, when I decided to dredge the deep water. I had been fishing near the bottom in deep water with an olive and brown crawfish pattern for about an hour when I hooked a heavy fish that fought hard to stay on the bottom. I was thinking big brown, when it left the bottom and a 27 inch rainbow leaped into the air in front of me. It broke water two more times and made a couple of hard runs before coming to the net. We fished another hour or so without success, steady rain had settled in and we decided to call it a day. Cold, wet, and happy!
Sarah and I are leaving for a week long stay in Canada, hopefully I will have something good to report when we return. The weather looks sketchy.
Safe travels and tight lines.
