Kootenay Lake:
Well, its’ begun! Today our water temperature finally dropped to the magic number and the fish have come alive!
Our day started with only 1 line in the water and that line started screaming……….. Fish on! Haven’t heard that sound for a while, as the fish have been a bit lethargic. But now that the water temperature is optimum, we should see some aggressive fish, which will provide some stronger battles.
Our first fish of the day was a feisty 7 Lb Rainbow. This was followed by consistent action all day, with the best fight being a beautiful 12 Lb Rainbow. A total of 15 fish on during the day made for some exciting action.
This is hopefully the beginning of our good fall/winter fishery.
The past month has seen some pretty good days of fishing. Although the number of fish each day was up, but the size of fish wasn’t. Still some good fishing had by all. Here’s hoping the big ones come alive with the colder weather approaching.
Columbia River:
With the rainy weather for the past few weeks, we haven’t had too much time on the river. However, when we did get out, we were still catching some nice Rainbows, as well as Walleye. The Walleye seemed to get thicker as October progressed.
Sinking fly lines with large nymphs seemed to be the ticket for the rainbows. And the usual jig head with a twister seemed to work well for the Walleye. Also caught a lot of fish using the 3-way bottom bouncer with worms.
We might still have a few days on the River if the weather cooperates. Looking forward to some nicer weather.
What are they biting on???
With the lake temperatures finally dropping, we are catching most fish on the surface. Our Bucktail flies trolled at 3.0mph have been producing well. Lucky colors have been gray/white, black/white, and purple/white. We’ve also been catching a few on the Halloween colors. Black and Orange or Brown and Orange have been producing. Lucky numbers have been: 210, 213, 214, 215, 228, 234.
Our Lyman plugs have been producing some nice fish as well. Both on the surface and down deep. My favorite plugs have been #16, 69, 98, 102.
Surface has been best for Rainbows. And for the Bull Trout, we’ve been catching most down deep between 75 – 120ft.
Fishing is always a guessing game, but one thing’s for sure: You can’t catch fish if you’re not out there. So, Let’s Go Fishing……………………
Tight lines,
Kerry Reed
