Fishing Report July 10, 2010

Alec standing next to the biggest Ponderosa Pine in Oregon. The monster pine has a diameter of over 8 feet and is 167 feet tall. It is estimated to be 500 years oldAlec, my middle grandson has been up to stay with us for a month this year. I truly love having my grandson's come to Oregon and stay with us each summer. It gives us some great quality time and they get their fill of camping, shooting, and fishing.......something neither of them get to do much at home in California.

Alec with a nice 4 LB. hookjaw from Paulina LakeWe had a slow start with rain for most of the first week and then my involvement with some HOA meetings that I couldn't miss. Anyway, we did have an epic trip to Wallowa lake and some brown action on some local lakes. He did manage to push his personal best brown trout mark up from 5 LB. to 8 Lb. last week on a trip to Paulina and that was the highlight of this trip.

A cool shot of Paulina Falls below the lakeWe decided we would head back to Paulina and East for our final outing this year. It seems that the fishing is in a bit of transition from the spring to summer pattern. With the long wet spring, it has put everything about a month behind schedule. It was slow fishing overall but we did get Alec into a couple of decent browns. Both of these browns (4 LB.) hit on a custom painted chub pattern plug that represents the tui chub that populate both these lakes and one of the reasons that the browns get so big. In fact, the ODFW was actually netting chubs from both lakes while we were there. I ran into John Hofferd and he said that they pulled out 800 Lb. in just one day from Paulina!

Alec with another 4 Lb. brown. After our stay, Alec wanted to see Paulina Falls and took some photos after the hike in. I also decided to take him to the State Park in LaPine to see the the largest Ponderosa Pine in the state. At 167 feet tall and a diameter of over 8 Feet, it truly is a giant of a pine. They claim that it has 25,000 board feet of lumber in it and was probably just poking through the ground when Christopher Columbus discovered the America's.

I will be taking Alec back home and picking up the oldest grandson, Colin, next week for his stay through mid-Aug. Look for more reports as we get out when I return.

Screamin' Drags,
Rick
