July 2 Report

Alec broke through with his best brown so far. The big hook went 8 LB. and was 27 in. Congrats buddy!

After the great trip we had to Wallowa, I was hoping the brown trout action would be as good as we headed out the door Wed. evening. We decided to hit one of our little lakes to start and go from there. The weather was turning and it is hard to know just what to expect when fronts move in.....sometimes the change is good and sometimes it isn't.

The mosquitoes were as bad as I had ever seen them when we pulled in. After bathing in Deet, we felt like we had done all you can. We had just enough time to get in a little trolling right before dark. As luck would have it, we only stuck one dink brown before we called it a night.

The next morning was calm and cooler and we got right out and after them. All in all, I scrambled for a total of 6 browns but nothing over 2.5 LB. It was slow on the bigger browns. We decided to make a move and pulled up and broke camp to head to Newberry Crater to sample Paulina and East Lakes. We got out on Paulina around 6:00 p.m. and worked in front of the resort. The water was still only 55 degrees after all the bad weather we have had this spring. We did get into (3) browns to 3 LB. before we decided to change tactics and do some casting.

After about three casts, my grandson, Alec was tight into a nicer brown. It took awhile to get this guy to the boat and when we first saw him, we knew he was at least 6 LB. When he tired him a bit, I finally slid the net under the 27 in., 8 LB. hookjaw brown. Alec was elated! It was his biggest brown to date. He has been stuck on 5 LB. mark for the last several years. His older cousin having a 12 LB. brown to his credit, has put some pressure on him and me as well. We high-fived and enjoyed the moment before we got back to fishing. The rest of the evening was fairly uneventful with about another 5-6 browns to 3 LB. before we pulled off at dark.

The next morning we awake to a steady rain and decided we would sleep in a bit. When we did finally get out on East lake, it was really starting to blow and the rain started up again. We did get into a few browns to around 3 Lb. before we decided to call it a day and get back home around noon. We will be back out next week for a few more days before he has to leave for California.

Look for another report by next weekend.

Tight Lines,
Rick
